How to Make Your Spray Tan Last Longer

My After Tan Guide to a Beautiful, Even Glow

A beautiful spray tan can give your skin a warm, sun-kissed look without spending hours in the sun. But if you want that glow to last, what you do after your appointment matters.

As an esthetician with 19 years of experience, I know that guests want more than beautiful color when they leave my spa. They want their tan to look natural, feel comfortable, and fade evenly over the following days.

The good news is that you can help your spray tan last longer with a few simple habits. The most important steps are: following your rinse instructions, moisturizing your skin, using gentle body care products, and avoiding unnecessary friction and exfoliation.

In this guide, I’ll explain how to care for your spray tan from the moment you leave your appointment through the days when your color begins to fade. Whether you’re preparing for a vacation, wedding, special event, or simply want to enjoy your glow, these tips can help you get more from your spray tan.

If you’re looking for professional spray tanning in Burbank, I also offer rapid and regular spray tanning options at Mekah’s Body Shop.

How Long Does a Spray Tan Last?

A professional spray tan typically lasts about 7-10 days, although some guests notice fading sooner. Your results depend on several factors, including your skin’s natural shedding cycle, how well you prepare your skin, the solution used, and your aftercare routine.

A spray tan develops color in the outermost layer of your skin. As those skin cells naturally shed, your tan gradually fades. This is a normal part of the process.

You may notice that your tan fades more quickly in areas that experience frequent washing, shaving, sweating, or friction. Hands, feet, elbows, knees, and other areas that experience regular contact may also fade differently from the rest of your body.

The goal is not to stop your skin from naturally shedding. The goal is to help your skin stay comfortable and hydrated so your color fades as evenly as possible.

1. Follow Your Spray Tan Rinse Instructions

Your first shower is one of the most important steps in spray tan aftercare.

Different tanning solutions have different development and rinse windows. Showering too early or leaving a solution on longer than recommended can affect your final result, so follow the instructions I give you during your appointment.

At my Burbank spa, I offer two spray tanning options:

  • Rapid spray tan: This option has a shorter rinse window, generally around 1-5 hours, depending on your desired result and the instructions for your solution.
  • Regular spray tan: This option has a 1-8 hour development window. Your recommended rinse time depends on the result you want.

If you have an event coming up, let me know when you book. I can help you choose an option that fits your schedule.

What should you do during the development period?

Until your recommended rinse time:

  • Keep your skin dry.
  • Avoid workouts that cause heavy sweating.
  • Avoid swimming or bathing.
  • Wear loose, dark clothing to reduce friction and visible transfer.
  • Avoid rubbing or touching your skin unnecessarily.

These steps help reduce the chance of uneven development while your solution is working.

What should you expect during your first shower?

Use lukewarm water and follow the specific washing instructions provided for your tanning solution. Some solutions call for a simple rinse first, while others allow gentle cleansing.

You may see brown or bronze color washing off. This is often the temporary cosmetic bronzer used to help guide the application. It does not mean your developed tan is disappearing.

After your shower, gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel instead of rubbing it vigorously.

My advice: If you are unsure when to shower, ask me rather than guessing. The right timing depends on the formula used for your appointment.

2. Moisturize Your Skin Every Day

If you want your spray tan to look good for as long as possible, make moisturizing part of your daily routine.

Dry skin can look rough and flaky, making a fading tan appear uneven. Moisturizing helps keep your skin comfortable and supple, which supports a smoother-looking finish as your color gradually fades.

When should you start moisturizing?

Wait until you have completed your first shower and your tanning solution’s instructions allow you to resume moisturizing. After that, apply moisturizer regularly.

Choose a product that works well with your tanning solution and your skin. A gentle, hydrating body lotion is a good place to start.

How often should you moisturize?

For many guests, moisturizing once or twice daily works well. Adjust your routine if your skin feels dry or if your product instructions recommend something different.

Pay attention to areas that tend to become dry, including:

  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Ankles
  • Shins
  • Hands and feet

Apply lotion evenly rather than concentrating a thick layer in one area. Wash your hands after application to avoid extra color developing on your palms from residual tanning product.

Does moisturizer make a spray tan last forever?

No. Moisturizer cannot stop your skin from naturally shedding, and it cannot prevent all fading. It can, however, help your skin stay hydrated and improve the appearance of your tan as it wears away.

If you are unsure which products to use, ask me for guidance at your appointment.

3. Choose Gentle Body Washes & Skin Care Products

Your everyday products can influence how your spray tan looks as it fades.

Harsh cleansing, frequent scrubbing, and strong exfoliating products can remove surface skin cells more quickly. That may cause your color to fade sooner or look less even.

What should you use in the shower?

Choose a gentle body cleanser that does not leave your skin feeling tight or stripped. Use your hands or a soft cloth rather than aggressively scrubbing your body.

Avoid using exfoliating gloves, rough loofahs, or body scrubs while you are trying to maintain your tan.

What about oils, acids, and retinoids?

You do not need to assume that every product containing oil or an active ingredient is automatically unsuitable. Formulas vary, and different ingredients can affect the skin and tanning products in different ways.

However, strong exfoliating products, alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, retinoids, and other treatments that increase skin turnover may cause your tan to fade more quickly or unevenly.

If you use these products as part of your skin care routine, ask your esthetician how to time them around your spray tan. Follow the guidance from your prescribing clinician for medications or treatments.

When in doubt, keep your body care routine simple while you are maintaining your color.

4. Be Careful With Hot Showers, Baths & Steam Rooms

A long, hot shower can feel relaxing, but repeated heat exposure and soaking may contribute to faster or less even fading for some guests.

You do not have to avoid showering to preserve your tan. Good hygiene still matters. Instead, focus on gentle habits.

Try these adjustments:

  • Use lukewarm rather than very hot water.
  • Keep showers reasonably short.
  • Avoid long soaks in the bathtub while maintaining your tan.
  • Be mindful of frequent sauna or steam room visits.
  • Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it with a towel.

You can still enjoy your regular routine. The goal is to avoid unnecessary heat, soaking, and friction that may make your color wear unevenly.

5. Avoid Excessive Exfoliation While You Want to Keep Your Tan

Exfoliation is helpful before a spray tan because it removes loose dead skin cells and creates a smoother surface for application. After your tan, however, frequent exfoliation can speed up fading.

This is one reason I recommend planning your skin preparation before your appointment and keeping your aftercare gentle afterward.

Should you use a body scrub after your spray tan?

If you want to maintain your color, skip body scrubs, exfoliating mitts, and rough washcloths. These can remove surface skin cells and cause your tan to fade more quickly.

When you are ready to remove your tan, gentle exfoliation can help you transition back to your normal routine. Avoid harsh scrubbing that leaves your skin irritated.

What if your tan begins to fade unevenly?

Resist the urge to scrub one patch aggressively. That can make the contrast more noticeable.

Instead, keep your skin moisturized and let the color fade naturally. If you need to remove the remaining tan before a new appointment, ask your tanning professional about an appropriate removal routine.

6. Be Mindful of Shaving & Hair Removal

Shaving can remove some of the surface skin cells that hold your developed tan, so frequent shaving may contribute to faster fading.

If you plan to shave, use a clean, sharp razor and a gentle shaving product. Avoid pressing too hard or repeatedly going over the same area.

Waxing and other hair-removal services should be planned before your spray tan whenever possible. Waxing removes hair and can exfoliate the skin, which may lift or remove some of your color.

If you need hair removal after a spray tan, remember that it may affect your results. Ask your esthetician how to schedule your services to reduce the chance of uneven fading.

For guests who regularly book waxing and spray tanning, timing both appointments thoughtfully can make a difference.

You can learn more about my services on the Mekah’s Body Shop waxing page.

7. Manage Sweat, Exercise, & Friction

Sweat and friction can be especially important during the first development period.

Before your first rinse, avoid strenuous workouts and activities that cause heavy sweating. Moisture and rubbing can interfere with even development.

After you have completed your first shower, you can generally return to your usual activities. Still, repeated friction may cause your tan to fade faster in certain areas.

How can you reduce friction?

  • Choose comfortable clothing that does not rub tightly against your skin.
  • Change out of sweaty clothes when practical.
  • Pat your skin dry after exercise or showering.
  • Avoid unnecessary rubbing with towels.
  • Be aware of repeated friction from tight waistbands, straps, or workout gear.

You do not have to give up exercise to maintain a spray tan. Simply be mindful of how moisture and rubbing affect your skin, especially during the first day.

8. Take Extra Care When Swimming or Spending Time in Water

Swimming pools, hot tubs, and saltwater can contribute to faster fading. Long periods in water, along with friction from towels and swimwear, may also affect how evenly your color wears.

If you have a pool day or beach trip planned, consider scheduling your spray tan far enough in advance to follow the correct development and rinse instructions first.

After swimming, rinse off when appropriate, gently pat your skin dry, and moisturize once your skin is ready for it.

Remember that a spray tan does not protect your skin from the sun. You still need broad-spectrum sunscreen and other sun-protection measures outdoors, even if your skin looks bronzed.

9. Understand Why Your Tan May Fade Unevenly

Even with good aftercare, some areas may fade sooner than others. That does not automatically mean your spray tan was applied incorrectly.

Your skin naturally sheds at different rates, and daily activities affect different parts of your body.

Here are a few common reasons for uneven fading:

Dry skin: Rough or flaky areas can make color look patchy.

Frequent washing: Hands and other frequently washed areas may lose color sooner.

Friction: Tight clothing, towels, and repetitive rubbing can affect the finish.

Shaving or exfoliation: These can remove surface skin cells and some of the color.

Swimming and soaking: Frequent water exposure may contribute to faster fading.

Natural skin renewal: Your tan gradually fades as the outer layer of skin sheds.

If you notice a small patch, avoid trying to fix it with aggressive scrubbing. Keep the area moisturized and allow the color to fade naturally. For a future appointment, let me know what happened so I can help you adjust your preparation and aftercare.

10. Plan Your Spray Tan Around Your Event

If you want your tan for a wedding, vacation, photoshoot, birthday, or other special event, plan ahead instead of booking at the last minute.

Give yourself time to follow your tanning solution’s development instructions and see how your color settles after the first rinse.

Your ideal schedule depends on the formula, your skin, and the event. I can help you decide whether a rapid or regular solution makes more sense for your plans.

A simple spray tan timeline

Before your appointment: Exfoliate ahead of time according to your preparation instructions. Arrive with clean skin and avoid applying lotions, oils, deodorant, or perfume if your tanning instructions tell you to avoid them.

Immediately after your appointment: Wear loose, dark clothing and keep your skin dry until your recommended rinse time.

After your first shower: Pat dry and begin moisturizing when your solution’s instructions allow it.

Over the next several days: Use gentle cleansers, moisturize regularly, and avoid aggressive exfoliation.

As your tan fades: Let the color wear off naturally. If you want another tan, ask about the best timing for your next appointment.

If your event is important, tell me the date when you book. We can plan your appointment around your schedule and the solution you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions About Making a Spray Tan Last Longer

How many days should a spray tan last?

A spray tan commonly lasts around 7–10 days, although your results may vary. Skin type, natural skin shedding, preparation, and aftercare all influence how long your color remains noticeable.

Can I shower after getting a spray tan?

Yes, but you need to wait until the recommended rinse time for your specific solution. Follow the instructions provided during your appointment rather than using the same timing for every formula.

Should I moisturize immediately after a spray tan?

Wait until your first shower is complete and your solution’s instructions allow you to moisturize. After that, regular moisturizing can help your skin stay hydrated and your color look more even as it fades.

Can I exercise after a spray tan?

Avoid heavy sweating until after your recommended first rinse. After that, you can generally return to your routine, but remember that repeated sweat and friction may contribute to uneven fading.

Does shaving make a spray tan fade faster?

It can. Shaving removes some surface skin cells, which may cause color to fade more quickly. Use a clean, sharp razor and gentle technique if you need to shave while maintaining your tan.

Can I go swimming after a spray tan?

You can swim after your solution has developed and you have completed the recommended rinse. However, chlorine, saltwater, soaking, and towel friction may contribute to faster fading.

Can I apply self-tanner over a fading spray tan?

It depends on how evenly your original tan is fading and which product you use. Applying additional color over patchy or dry areas may make unevenness more noticeable. Follow the product instructions and consider allowing the existing tan to fade before applying another product.

Does a spray tan protect me from sunburn?

No. A spray tan does not replace sunscreen or other sun-protection measures. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed whenever you are outdoors.

What is the best way to keep my spray tan from looking patchy?

Start with proper preparation, follow your rinse instructions, moisturize regularly, use gentle body care products, and avoid aggressive exfoliation. You cannot prevent every bit of fading, but these habits can help your color wear more evenly.
